Table of contents
Exadellers never fail to impress us with their unique hobbies. Today’s featured hero is Nikolai Prusov, Lead Software Engineer from the Exadel Poland team.
Apart from expertly navigating coding complexities, he boldly explores the ocean’s mysteries as a certified freediver. We sat down with Nikolai to hear his riveting stories from the depths of the sea. Would you dare to try a freediving adventure?
Tell us a bit about your hobby: When did your passion start?
I participated in a breath-holding competition (STA) without any preparation and, to my big surprise, I ended up in one of the prize-winning positions. This was the start of my freediving journey, which I continue today as an instructor.
What’s your record in freediving so far?
My best is around 60 meters, approximately equivalent to a 20-floor building.
What secret power does this hobby give you?
Freediving gives me the unique ability to dive deep into the ocean, where I descend and ascend to the surface in one breath. It helps me to find peace and push my limits, revealing my hidden strengths.
What’s your most memorable freediving experience?
Taking a freedive through the underwater arc at the Blue Hole in Dahab (Red Sea), located at a depth of around 30 meters. The sensation of gliding gracefully through the natural formation, surrounded by vibrant marine life, left an indelible mark on me.
How do you balance your hobbies and professions?
I primarily practice freediving after work. I lead the course during vacations. This allows me to maintain a clear separation between my hobby and work. However, they sometimes overlap, offering unique perspectives and enhancing my overall well-being.
Share some tips on how to take up freediving!
Before trying freediving, take a certified course to learn essential techniques and safety procedures. If you cannot take the course, any breath-holding activity underwater is, to some extent, considered freediving. Start slowly, without pushing your limits, and always dive with a buddy to ensure your safety.
